He will soon be appointed Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi. Not surprisingly, the President of the United Nations Human Rights Council has just approved the recommendation of the Consultative Group which had placed Fortuné Gaetan ZONGO ahead of the other two candidates during the last selection. The Burkinabe Fortuné Gaetan ZONGO has just been approved as a suitable candidate for the position of Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Burundi by the President of the UN Human Rights Council Federico Villegas after consultations held in particular through the regional coordinators. His appointment will be finalized after approval by the Human Rights Council which starts its 49th session next Monday.
Although it has already announced that it will not allow the Special Rapporteur to set foot on its territory, the government of Burundi is expected to relent after the lifting of economic sanctions by the European Union and the fact that a Special Rapporteur is not as effective as a commission of inquiry.
Fortuné Gaetan ZONGO is 48 years old and is currently President of the Court of Appeal of Fada N’gourma in Burkina Faso. This Burkinabè holds a law degree and a Master of Laws from the University of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, an inter-university postgraduate diploma in fundamental rights from the University of Nantes in France, and a diploma of magistrate from the National School of Administration and Magistracy of Burkina Faso. Between 2011 and 2014, Fortuné Gaetan ZONGO was elected to the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, serving as its member.
